Reflection on Discourse Community Ethnography

Well, how to start with this interesting yet unique experience? As a member of the community I live in, I have been introduced to various aspects of it like ethics and language among other topics. We tent to get used to or adapt only to what we know or what has been presented to us as the “norm”. One of the things I have found fascinating in my life and journey is that communities are more diverse and, in some cases, more complex that what we can even comprehend. There are communities withing a community that varies from cultural, ethnic geographic and even religion. Some of them of course are out in the open while other are more secluded or isolated. What I learned through this assignment is that there have to be specific characteristics or requirements needed in order for a group of individuals to be considered a community. More so, when we have talked about Discourse Community. Every community is composed of a group that has particular rules, customs beliefs and standards to go by. There are of course other factors but for the most part is what determines if a group of people can be considered a community. They vary in size, regions and even as nations.

When it comes to Discourse Community, they have sex main characteristics that once and effectively exposed or reflected can help us not only to identify but also to understand it with more capacity. They have a common goal in other means a purpose. They also have a unique way of communication within its members. In other words, they have internal means of effective communication. They also have a lexis, a written style of communication or disseminating information, diverse fields of expertise as well as requirements to be part of among others. To me vas very interesting as well and amazing the knowledge received after being able to do research, interviews and elaborate on this paper. It made me realize the importance of not only being open-minded but also to be teachable in concepts that might be unknown to many. Often, we tend to either assume, or believe in only what is comfortable or easy to understand and make wrong judgement on what is unheard of causing in some cases, offensive behaviors or lack of communication. We are part of a huge society composed of communities of all sizes, shapes and forms and it is imperative that we learn to cohabitate with one another to make this world a better place. By learning about discourse community not only as a student but in my case, as a Bishop and part of one, to open myself for new opportunities. The possibilities are vast and there is still so much to learn from them and I am willing and humbled to have such opportunity to do so. It is my hope to continue to expand the knowledge as well as the field of study when it comes to discourse community to be able to understand dome and become not only part of other but an asset as well.
